Hacking the box

amgat — Wed, 03/26/2008 - 22:53

The really interesting part about the item description was the text:

“The navigating firmware in the SD card can be run directly”

That piece of text was the actual reason why I bought the device.

I was very excited when I picked up the package at the post office and opened the box in my car. All items were intact and the box itself was very good packed so the journey from China to Norway would be as safe as possible. I tested Route66 for a while but I felt the software itself was not that good so I wanted to change it.

This GPS is actually a PNA. A Personal Navigation Assistant (PNA) also known as Personal Navigation Device (PND) is a full Personal Digital Assistant (PDA). But it is locked from the factory to be only used for specific purposes: in the first instance for car navigation through a dedicated software program, and optionally for listening to mp3 files or viewing images, text files and small video files. The SP35A is locked by default when started as normal but it is very easy to access the native Windows CE OS.

If you want your PNA to work like a PDA you will have to unlock its full potential, i.e. to access the Windows CE operating system that runs on this device.

In the following section I will talk about changing the actual navigation software on this device and I will also change some of the files stored in the device’s hardware.

This following content is not for the faint of heart. If the thought of breaking your device is too hard for you to bear then you should stop reading now and continue reading the tech news headlines instead.

Always back up your files before changing anything!

I am not responsible for your actions!
