Installing tomtom

Tomtom navigator is a very good GPS navigation software and it's my first choice of navigation software. It's very simple to use and yet it has lots of features. Some of the features i use frequently is POI (Point Of Interest) notifications. I have configured tom tom to notify me whenever I am near a speed camera.
As i mentioned in the previous section, you can extract cab files using MSCEinf and copy the files directly to your memory card. I have already extracted the tomtom navigator 6.204 cab file so you can copy it straight to your memory card.
Files used in this tutorial

WinCE tools
Maps can be bought directly from the tomtom website. There are also various forum websites if you prefer other sources :

First step
- Let's start by downloading the WinCE tools.
- Now connect your SD memory card to your computer using the SD card adapter that came with your GPS device or use a card reader.
- Extract the contents of the zip file into your /sdmmc/ directory on your SD card. You should now have /sdmmc/tools
Changing the registry
Tomtom will not work without some simple registry tweaking. You will need to make "my documents" available from your memory card instead of the devices resident memory.
- Start your device in WinCE mode (see Accessing Windows CE)
- Create the directory /SDMMC/My Documents (Choose File -> New Folder. Click on the icon on the bottom line to the right and choose keyboard for the keyboard to pop up).
- Start "regedit.exe" from the tools directory
- Choose "LMachine" from the drop down menu on the top left side.
- Scroll down to System
- Scroll down to Explorer
- Scroll down to Shell Folders
- Now use the arrows at the bottom and find "My Documents : SZ : \My Documents". Double tap this line and change the Data of the value to "\SDMMC\My Documents" without the quotes and click OK.
- Turn off the device by pressing the standby button on the top side of the device (NOT the on/off button power)
- Turn on t he device by pressing the standby button again. You should be back inside regedit.
- Close regedit and turn off your device using the power switch.
- Restart your device and start regedit again to verify that the settings stick. You may continue if they did.
Transferring the rest of the files
- Extract the tomtom zip file into a temporary directory on your computer.
- Go to the root of your SD card.
- Copy the TOMTOM directory onto your SD card
- There is already a My Documents folder there so you don't need to copy that.
- I have also included the Shell.ini file so that tomtom becomes the default navigation software. Do not copy this file if you already use another shell.ini file.
Tomtom is now ready for use. The only thing missing is maps. The maps can be copied directly into the My Documents directory.
